A Future Where Learning Fits into Your Journey, Wherever You're Going
Some Context
Speechify is a text-to-speech (TTS) reader that enables you to listen to all your documents, emails, textbooks, and anything on the internet.
When Americans listen to podcasts, their 2nd and 3rd most common listening situations are while commuting (42%) or working out (29%).

My Role
Being the lead designer on this self-directed project, I oversaw a diverse range of responsibilities that were integral to every aspect of the process.
The Problem
Speechify users primarily utilize the platform while moving (commuting and exercising). The current design requires more steps to continue listening journeys than any other major audio platform, making it frustrating to use while multitasking.
The Goals
1) Allow users to access content < 2 steps
2) Make content quickly accessible while also enabling the visibility of a large library of content
2) Make content quickly accessible while also enabling the visibility of a large library of content
User Research: Summary
I aimed to explore how users prefer to listen to content with text-to-speech (TTS) technology, along with the activities they engage in, whether facilitated or hindered by the platforms. I interviewed five individuals who have utilized a text-to-speech reader while commuting or working out within the past six months.
Job to be done:
I want to play my recent content quickly.
What I Learned
Speechify truly stands above its competitors in the quality of its TTS voice and the number of supported content types. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and discovering how and why listeners rely on Speechify. Through research, I uncovered the disparity between listener needs and Speechify’s offerings, providing a foundation and opportunity to improve the overall journey and experience.
